Pirates
Invade THE SCHIELE MUSEUM
May 15th through December 2010

Welcome to a world of swashbucklers, scallywags, and scurvy sea dogs-- it’s the pirates
of the New World--that motley mob that ruled the waves from Carolina to the Caribbean.
Here you’ll meet Calico Jack, Anne Bonny, Mary Read, Stede Bonnet and, aye--Blackbeard himself. Walk the decks of a pirate ship, visit a pirate camp, wander the dark streets of
a pirate town, and uncover a rich buried treasure of pirate facts and fiction. Design your
own Jolly Roger, tour the Rogue’s Gallery and view genuine 18th century pirate artifacts recovered from Queen Anne’s Revenge. Be there--if you dare!

Last Days of Blackbeard the Pirate

June 3, 7 PM

What happened in the last days before Blackbeard’s demise? Who was the real Edward Teach, and from whence did he come? What was his true name? And where may he have hidden his treasure? For many years researcher and author Kevin Duffus observed that most historical accounts describing Black Beard the pirate’s last days were inaccurate, insufficiently researched, and, as it turned out, not nearly as interesting as the truth. And the true facts about Blackbeard’s last days promise to substantially change his story—and history. For the first time, Duffus exposes the truth behind many of the enduring Blackbeard myths—his Bristol, England, birthplace; his 14 wives, including Mary Ormond; the burning of fuses in his hair to frighten his victims; and the countless tall tales of buried treasure, secret tunnels, and the shocking origins of the legend of his silver-plated skull used as a drinking cup by a secret society. Join us for an exciting presentation on the controversial life, and death, of history’s most famous pirate. Come early and enjoy refreshments and explore Pirates – our original exhibit – from 6:00 – 7:00. Call 704-854-6676 for advance tickets. $4 Members / $5 Non-members / Free for Gaston teachers with advance registration.
