Gastonia's Schiele Museum of Natural History features the largest collection of land mammal specimens in the Southeast, from common raccoons to huge buffalo. But that's just the beginning. It has five permanent galleries with vivid natural history exhibits, plus outdoor recreations of an Indian Village and an 18th Century Farm, and a breaktaking planetarium. Also enjoy a wide variety of continuously changing exhibits on timely topics such as the space shuttle, small live animals, or educational programs such as how to make a sundial.

The Schiele Museum features these permanent galleries:

  • North Carolina Hall of Natural History — beautiful dioramas of the 5 regions of North Carolina from the mountains to the sea.
  • Hall of North American Habitats — dioramas of Everglades, Sonoran Desert, and Alaskan tundra biomes.
  • Hall of North American Wildlife — moose, elk, buffalo, and other large mammals of North America; birds, insects, reptiles, amphibians and small mammals of North Carolina.
  • Hall of Earth and Man — fossils of dinosaurs, mastodon, saber-tooth cats, and other pre-historic life; displays about Early Man; largest gem & mineral display in North Carolina.
  • Henry Hall of the North American Indian — displays of housing, tools, weapons, adornments, and utilitarian objects of 12 tribal groups of 5 regions of North America; Native voices telling their own stories.

Also in the main facility, the Schiele Shop features a variety of gifts and educational items related to nature and history — rocks and minerals, field guides and books for children or adults, T-shirts, jewelry, puppets, stuffed animals, posters, Native craft items, toys, and games.
